Why You Think Everyone Is Judging Your English (and Why They Are Not)

Think about the last time you spoke English in front of people. A meeting. A viva. An interview. A family function where a relative asked, "So, how is your English these days?"

Do you remember what your mind did? It probably ran a movie: "They noticed that mistake. They are thinking I am weak. They will remember this."

Now here is the strange part. Nobody was watching that movie except you.

A T-shirt experiment

In 2000, psychologists at Cornell University ran a funny experiment. They asked students to wear an embarrassing T-shirt with a big photo of Barry Manilow (a singer many students found very uncool) and walk into a room full of other students.

The students in the T-shirt guessed that about half the room would notice it. In reality, only about one in four people did.

Researchers call this the spotlight effect. We feel like we are standing under a bright spotlight. In reality, everyone else is standing under their own spotlight, worrying about their own T-shirt.

Your English mistake is your Manilow T-shirt. You think the whole room saw it. Most people didn't. And the ones who did forgot it in ten seconds.

The second trick your mind plays

There is another one, called the illusion of transparency. It means we believe our nervousness is written on our face. Our heart is racing, so we assume everyone can see it.

They can't. When you feel like you are shaking, the listener usually sees a calm person. When you feel like you froze for one minute, they saw a pause of two seconds.

So why does it feel so real?

Because you have English inside you. You read it, you watch it, you understand it. You know the difference between what you want to say and what came out of your mouth. Nobody else can see that gap. Only you can. And you are the harshest judge in the room.

Where AI helps (this part is new)

Here is something that was not possible ten years ago. You can now practise speaking with something that cannot judge you.

AI does not roll its eyes. It does not check the time. It does not tell its friends about your mistake. It does not get tired when you ask the same thing five times.
